How to Test for Moisture in your Home
Heidi: As a little side note to the home energy audit that we’re doing Gary had notice to appear there has been a little bit of damage to the ceiling from and the homeowners had mentioned this that they have a little open patio upstairs up off on the master suite and there is some problems with water collection in a certain area. At any rate, Gary mentioned that he has a tool that can detect a little bit of problems that might be created. So I’ll let him describe that a little bit further and then we’ll do a test.
Gary Kahanak: Thanks Heidi. Yeah, these are the moisture meter. It measures relative humidity in the air but also can detect relative differences in surface moisture and can be an indication of moisture in the wall and this is part of the standard energy auditor’s tool kit because occasionally if you have improper insulation it could lead to common incision walls which can lead to molds. So that’s one thing that we test for or check if we suspect a moisture problem.
So in this particular case, we’ll see if there is in kind of existing moisture issue. You can know that it had leaking in the past. In this setting we’ve got about 8.3. It’s just a relative number for the interior wall and Heidi is going to just set it on the ceiling in various spots and we’ll see if we have moisture problem.
Heidi: This says 8.9.
Gary Kahanak: At 8.9, it’s a little bit higher. We’re going to go some of these red spots.
Gary Kahanak: Over here I think at the end of that crack.
Heidi: Right here?
Gary Kahanak: Uh-huh.
Gary Kahanak: So there is a little bit of moisture in there, not terrible but I'm sure there is much water earlier.
Heidi: Right when the natural rain was happening.
Gary Kahanak: Right.
Heidi: And this is a great tool to have too as we’re going to go through remodeling some of our customer’s homes and obviously in this home itself if there are things it’s a great tool that we have connection with Gary to be able to use, things like this to see what we need fixed. Thanks Gary.
