Really, it’s amazing how much information stored on a cellphone. It’s not just things like call history but also text messages, now emails and even multimedia files. What if you wanted to get all of that information off in an easy way? Well, I've come across an interesting little device originally designed for law enforcement but it might have business applications as well. Perhaps an employees leaving and it’s a company phone and you want to get that information back so that you can have access and record to it.
Well, what you do basically is plug this device into the phone and it sucks off all that information and then it allows you to take it to a computer and create an entire report of all the contents. It’s called the CSI Stick, it’s from a company called Paraben. And as you can see right on the front here, it’s got a few different settings. Right at the top there, I can get things like text files that can even go down and get multimedia files or a complete disc image as well.
Now, I'll quickly show you how this works. It comes with a power supply that you plug it in to the USB side here and then you plug it in to the side of your phone. Right now again, it just works with Motorola and Samsung. They are designing some additional adaptors as well. And I hit the Start button and what it’s doing now is taking all that information on the phone and sticking it in into the actual flash drive.
Typically, it takes about 20 minutes so I’ve already done this ahead of time but what you do once it’s finished is plug it in to the side of your laptop and with the software that comes with the device, it’s called the DS Light, it then damps all of that information into this program and you can look at pretty well everything. All of the call history, text messages, even things like emails and attachments and multimedia files as well. If you want to, you can even create reports that will export them into Excel files.
Again, you obviously have to be really careful with something like this. A lot of privacy issues around it but again it’s called the CSI Stick, it’s from Paraben and if you got a business application for this, it’s a great way to get that information off a cellphone and on to your computer.
