I'm Dawn Anderson and I'm showing you how to sew by hand. Right now, we're going to sew on a hook and eye. So, this is the hook and then this is the eye. You would use the hook and eye for the top of a zipper or even the top of a dress. I'm going to use double thread. So, go ahead and cut approximately 18 inches of thread. Thread it through your needle and tie a knot into both ends. The hook always goes onto the top side with the edge, with the hook pointed towards the edge. I usually just to hold my thumb down just to keep it in place and we're going to start sewing through the loops. Take up a small amount of fabric. Have your needle come through the hole and then back around. Again, we're using double thread so that it's nice and strong and I go through each loop maybe two or three times and then move on to the other side and again maybe here's one stitch, two and then three and then you want to secure the hook to the edge of the fabric as well. So, you're going to tunnel underneath and come out at the edge of the hook. Pull your thread through, take your thread under the hook and then take your needle through to the underside and you're just going to sew the hook down. Again, maybe just two or three stitches and then the third and then to knot your thread, go ahead and knot it right on the side of the hook. Put your thumb down, tighten it up. I'd like to bury the thread under the fastener, come back through and cut your thread. Okay, now we need to place the loop on the other side and I have a trick for that. What you're going to do, put the hook down, fold the top back, see if you can see that here, and then take your pin, take up some fabric on either side, have the pin go through the hook and then back through the fabric so that the hook is actually hooking onto the center of the pin. Go ahead and unhook it and then that's going to give you the placement for the eye. Now, to sew on the eye line up the center of the pin here, at the middle of the eye and then carefully hold that down with your thumb until you get a few stitches and its going to want to move around. Again, start from the outside, come through the hole in the loop and then two, maybe three stitches on each side and then over to the second side. Again, holding that down in place, you want to try to keep it even and then maybe another stitch and then when you go to knot it, go ahead take up a little bit of fabric on the outside, sometimes the double thread will make a loop, it's alright. Come through to the outside, take up a small amount of fabric, loop your knot, pull it through and cut it and that's how you sew on a hook and eye. Now let's move on to sewing pants hook and eyes.
