FACTBOX: NO REPORTER NARRATION BlackBerry is launching its new flagship Z10 handset in India. BlackBerry's India market share exceeds its global average. Carrier handset subsidies are rare in India, so cheap BlackBerries are popular. The Z10 retails at $800, far above the average market selling price. Competitor Apple has historically not made India a priority. "I love India, but I believe that Apple has some higher potential in the intermediate term in some other countries." - Tim Cook (July 24, 2012) Last quarter, nearly 75% of Apple's Asia earnings came from China & Japan alone. But now Apple is pushing into India, offering the iPhone 5 in installments. The amount due up front? Just $93. Apple's gains in Q4 suggest its strategy is paying off. With just 4% smartphone penetration among subscribers, India may be the next big battleground.
