Hi! I am Bob McNally for Salt Water Sportsman magazine. Live blue crabs are one of the best baits for all kinds of saltwater fish. From the cobia off-shore to permit on the flat red fish, a wide variety of fish love them. It's very easy to rig, very easy to fish with all kinds of tackle.
First, thing to do is take the pincer claws off the blue crab. Just pull them off, that way they don't bury down into the grass and they stay more vulnerable to the predator.
Match the size of the hook, to the size of the crab. This is rather large, large hook probably 4.0 because it's a pretty good size blue crab. Then you just slowly work the hook point through the underside of the shell. Very carefully, so you just get the point through.
Once that point gets through, you just pop-it through the top of shell, eventually you will route out a little small for the hook point to go through and the entire hook will work through. And that's essentially the setup for fishing a live blue crab. It provides enough weight to cast most of the time, sometimes you can use a jig head instead of a single hook, like this and it's deadly for a wide variety of fish. Anytime you need a blue crab for a live bait, this is the way to rig it up.
