How to Replace an Indesit Washing Machine Door Handle

Hi, I’m Mike from eSpares. If you’ve ever tried to remove your laundry from the machine before the cycle is finished you’ll probably have ended up wrenching quite hard on the handle, here. This is how they get damaged. In this video I’m going to show you how to replace them.

First thing I need to do is remove the door from the machine, because it’s going to be easier to work on it like that. This machine has the door attached with Torx screws. So you need to use a Torx head or a Torx key set which are available on the eSpares website. Now the door’s off, I’m going to separate it into two halves so that I can get to the latch mechanism, using a Philips head screwdriver. So the screws have been removed. But the two halves of the door are still attached to each other. I’m going to use a blunt knife and slide around the edge to release them from one another.

I’m now able to remove the outside of the door and the glass, leaving me with just the inside of the door with the handle mechanism to work on. It doesn’t matter which part of your old handle is broken, you’ll going to need to remove it and all of its components anyway. Here’s a quick tip: use a camera to take a couple of pictures of either side of it so that you know how to put it back together afterwards. Now it’s this pin here that’s holding everything together so you need to push it through. You’re best off starting from this side, I’m using a thin screwdriver to get it some of the way that side, then push it the rest of the way to the other side. Now when you pull this all the way through you’ll have released all of the bits.

So, here is your replacement kit: the handle, the spring, the latch and the pin. The spring goes in first, here. Next the latch, which goes this way round and this side of the spring. Hold that steady for the moment and now push the pin half way in. You can’t push it in all the way yet because you still need to line up the handle. It’s a matter of getting all these holes aligned and pushing the pin all the way through all of them, which can be a bit tricky. I think that’s it. If it has gone through properly; you should find a spring in the handle. I now want to reassemble the rest of the door. Firstly the glass slips underneath the handle and line up the notch, down there. You can lie that flat for the moment and you click the outside of the door into place now.

That leaves us just needing to replace the screws. I’m putting the door back on. And that’s how you replace the washing machine door handle.
