Let us talk about notes you play with the left hand. First you are going to learn is the short scale. On the third string, we are going to play the third string open and the third string at the second fret. That is a G and an A. The second string then will be our next note and we’ll play it open and then we’ll play the second string at the first fret. Notice that I use my middle finger for the second fret and my index for the first fret on my left hand.
On the first string, play open and second fret. Now we have a little scale. If you can try to place your left hand at the same time as you pluck the note with your right hand. At first you’ll find you need to place your finger to get ready and then pluck the string, but eventually you will want to play them together the tone ends up being better that way.
Avram Siegel provides detailed step by step instructions to start your journey into playing the 5-string Banjo. You will also learn many classic Bluegrass Songs!
