Hi, I’m Lisa McCormick and in this mini lesson, I’m going to show you how play harmonics on the guitar. Harmonics are these kind of chimey bell sounds that you can make with very special placement in a very special touch. Let me come up closer and show you how to do that. First thing you want to do to get started learning how to do harmonics is to find the 12th fret of your guitar. Chances are that you got 2 dots there. Not every guitar has that, but most of them do. So that will make it easier to find. Okay, so I got my hand ready to find the twelfth fret, but what I'm going to do to get the harmonic is actually bring this finger up the neck a tiny bit more so that it actually right over the fret bar itself. I'm not going to press down with any pressure at all, I'm just going to touch it right at that spot. The lightest touch possible. If I experiment with moving the finger down the neck or up the neck just a little bit. Tiny bit more pressure or tiny bit less pressure I get better tone. And you just have to experiment to find that sweet spot. That’s pretty sweet. Just the lightest touch. So here's how it would sound if we actually fretted those notes. That’s pretty sweet. Just the lightest touch.
