Jim’s Garden Tip is brought to you by Zamzows, nobody knows like Zamzows.
Today, I’m going to show you how to prepare your soil for spring planting. First, you have to select an area that’s got good, full sand. If you’ve still got grass in that area, you need to spade it and remove all roots and grasses from that area. This plucked grass will grow with the stone and it will just grow out through your garden so you need to remove roots and all.
Once we’ve got all the grass and weeds removed from the soil, we’ll put down a layer of compost. Then, you need a good organic base fertilizer. This is a poultry byproduct with traced minerals in it. Give it a pretty good shot of that. And in some cases if your ground is really hard, you’ll put gypsum and/or lime or sulfur on the ground. Gypsum will soften the soil and help take the salt down.
Now, we’re going to spade this and mix it all in. Some people use a root killer but since I use gardening for part of my exercise program, I like to spade it and rake it. You can rake it out nice and smooth, get rid of the clogs and now we’re ready to plant. Join us next time and I’ll show you how to plant peas and potatoes.
