How to Patch Asphalt

ERIC STROMER: If you have an asphalt driveway, you know that as water seeps into the surface and temperatures fluctuate, small cracks can soon become big problems. I’m Eric Stromer, and in this GMC Trade Secret I’m going to show you how to take care of those pesky cracks and holes in your asphalt.
To start, you’ll need to use a pressure washer or hose to clean off all the dirt and oil off your driveway. Next, remove all the grass and weeds. Then use a wire brush or chisel to dig away any chunks of loose asphalt. Clean out all the debris with a shop vacuum or a stiff brush.
Now, when your cracks are completely cleaned out, you can use something like this to patch it. It’s a caulk tube filled with crack filler. You can use this material in a crack that’s up to one inch. You just go ahead and run your caulk tube along the crack. Then you can come back over it with a putty knife and flatten it out.
Now, on cracks that are an inch or larger, you can use something like this. This is a premix asphalt patch. Now, make sure again that all your debris is out of the crack. For example, here we’ve got some left over. You want to pull this stuff out. And then this premix driveway patch, you can use a margin trowel or something like that. Go ahead and fill in your crack. Let it dry for 24 hours. There probably will be some shrinkage. Then you’ll come back over it with one more layer to make it flat and flush with the top of the driveway.
Well, it’s as simple as that. From here, I’m going to continue filling my driveway’s cracks and potholes. Now, to further protect the asphalt, follow this up with a layer of asphalt sealant.
This is Eric Stromer, and that was your GMC Trade Secret.
