Joe Harberg: Making sure your attic is energy efficient can reduce energy usage by as much as 30-50%. Insulate your sealing with 12 inches of insulation or grader. Well it should have a minimum of three-and-a-half inches of insulation. Seal air ducts with metal-reinforced tape, mastic or aerosolized to improve your system's efficiency by as much as 20%.
Install radiant barrier. Radiant barrier aluminum reflects up to 97% of radiant heat from the attic, reducing attic temperatures as much as 50 degrees, and cooling cost as much as 17% each year.
Remember, poorly insulated homes require an inside temperature of at least 3 degrees higher or lower to maintain the same level of comfort.
