How to Make Edible Creatures Part 1
Well, if you’re looking for something fun to do at home that is edible, we’ve got this cute little creatures that we made from all different kinds of things in the pantry in the kitchen. And what we used for glue was just icing and we’ve got a little butterfly here and a little spider and we’ve got a fish and a little funny bug and a caterpillar, and a little girl with long red hair. And all we really needed was the icing and whatever food you have around the house in your kitchen. Candy, if you want to eat this when you’re all finished. Make sure you’re using things that are edible if you plan on just keeping them as little creatures and then later preserving them which I’ll show you how to do that at the end. You could use things like different colored beans and split peas to decorate with.
So what I’m going to do is put this aside and go ahead and show you how we make some of these little creatures. Let’s add some gum Brach’s here and I have scissors because what I’m going to make first is just going to cover this. The Oreo is going to serve as the body and then icing is the glue. So we have one kind to make this into little wings. We need some lace so we’ve got some Twizzler like this and we need something to make a little head, there we go. We’ve got a little bug with purple eyes and it’s definitely ready to eat.
Let’s try or maybe we can do a butterfly with that some gummy worms here and just use the icing to kind of glue them together and let’s see. Now, we can do the wings like that and then we’ve got the half wing like that. And there we have our butterfly. And I guess the butterfly probably needs some little eyes so maybe we’ll just cut out some big gummy eyes. Now, if you wanted to, you could go ahead and put icing on the wings and then stick other decorations on them. Now, that might be kind of fun.
So with just a little bit of icing and some food from your pantry and an imagination, I think you can have a lot of fun making this little food creatures and then doubling them down. Now, one thing that you can do if you want to is after this you’ve a chance to get a little on this tail side and the icing is started to set in place and it has a few days to dry out. You can actually coat with a thin coating of polymer medium which is like putting plastic around them. And I’m going to show you how you can go ahead and preserve this and turn them into a magnet. I’m going to use my gloss medium and because it’s a plastic kind of product, it’s going to encase the little creature in the polymer, the little plastic coating. And that will make it waterproof but I still wouldn’t drop it onto the sink.
What I’m going to do is I’m just going to paint some polymer on it and you have to also do the under side of it. And you just want to be real gentle so that you don’t accidentally knock any of the pieces off of it. And you even have to make certain that you’re covering on the cookie, you know how it sandwich together. You have to make certain to get the polymer under there too. So I’m just going to go ahead and do the whole top of him in the sides and then when that polymer dries, I can turn him over and paint the under side and preserve that.
Here’s my little bug and I just want you to see how the polymer and gives him a real shiny, glossy look. And what I’m going to do next, I’m going to put polymer on the back of him. And then when it’s dry, I’m going to put on the under side of him.
And then when it’s dry, I’m going to take a magnet and you can get this. I bought this at an arts and crafts store and they weren’t very expensive at all. And you just take your hot glue gun and you’re going to glue one of the magnets to the bottom of your little creature and then he’s going to be set to go to hang on your refrigerator. So I’m going to go back to make some more of these creatures and I’m looking forward to eating them too. So have fun in the kitchen, it’s creative, it’s artistic and it’s a lot of fun.
