How to Make a Flower Pot Part 1

From this egg carton and this flowerpot, I’m going to show you how you can make your very own decorative flower arrangement. So let’s go ahead and get started.

You’re going to need an empty egg carton, a flower pot maybe that nobody’s using in the garage, some paint, some pipe cleaners, maybe some pink markers for decorating and if you’ve got glitter or beads or any other decorative things leftover from other projects, there’s a lot of possibilities of things you can do with lots of materials that you have left over.

So first thing we’re going to do is cut apart this egg carton and the little cups are actually what we use to form the flowers because they already have a nice bowl shape to them. And then that way, we can cut into them and create different shape of petals. So we don’t need that and I’m just going to cut through here to separate these little egg cups. I used five on this, I always like to use odd numbers because I think balance wise when you’re going to put it together, I just think an odd number works better but we could do five or seven. And you could do as many as you want if you have a really big flower pot obviously you’re going to want more flowers.

And if you had a 12 pack of eggs then you can make lots of flowers. You kind of have the makings of the flower there already. You could leave this one just as it is or you might want to just cut into where it has a natural that’s already has a flower shape to it. So you can bend this out a little bit. So there’s our first flower right there. So you can lay that one down.

And then maybe what you want to do is trim the whole top off of it here and maybe two cuts going towards the center and then you open them because the Styrofoam will bend. And then I’m going to cut to shape my petals. Now, you needed to be a little bit careful because this could easily come off but see now I’ve opened it so that makes a nice little flower shape. Round this off a little bit and we’ll try another kind of flower. There we have another shape.

So right now, we’ve three different shapes of flowers. So let’s keep going and see how many different kinds or we can repeat and just do it in different colors. We’ve got five different shaped flowers here. We’re going to go ahead and paint them different colors. And I think considering that I have a small flower pot, I think I’m just going to stick with the five just like I did on this one.

Now, as far as decorating the flower pot, this one was actually the natural color and all I did was just use spray paint and I spray painted it white. And then I used paint pens to do all the decorating there. They’re paint markets that actually have the paint inside the marker and it looks like paint but you use them like you would a regular marker. And they hold up really well.

But on this particular one, I think what I’m going to do is I want to use the natural color of clay, the red. And then I’m going to paint my designs on here so that’s going to come after we paint the flowers. So let’s pick out some fun flower colors using acrylic paint because it will adhere to the Styrofoam. If you try using let’s say watercolors or a Tempera kind of paint, it’s going to resist the paint.

You can buy acrylics in tubes or in these little jars. I like them in these little jars because the consistency is ready to paint with right out of the container. And you’re going to want to paint the inside and the outsides of all your flowers. And then you have to set them aside and let them dry before we put the centers in them. There we have our five flowers painted and while they dry now would be a good time to think about how I want to decorate my flower pot.

So first thing I need to do is come up with the color scheme and let’s see, just yellow would look good. So maybe we’ll do these three colors. So what I need is I need to clean my brush and I’m going to use a small brush because I’m going to do little flowers all along the top. And if I’m very steady I think I can do the centers and all the little petals just by using a paint brush. So let’s go ahead and get started here.

I’ve got the petals. I didn’t smear anything, lucky. Let’s set this down for a minute and then I’m going to put a different color at the center, the alternating ones. I’m thinking maybe along the bottom here I might do something similar to what I did on the other one maybe just on one side. I think I’m just going to put a little border on the top and then I think that’s going to be it. So now, I think we’ll just set it aside and let it dry, kind of simple but decorative. And we can always come back and add something else that we might think of along the way maybe with paint pens or just more paint.

But for now, I kind of like it’s simple and we’re going to set that aside. We’re going to let the flowers dry, like the pot dry and then when we come back, after everything is dry, we’re going to go ahead and finish our flowers by putting centers on them and then putting them on the pipe cleaners and then putting the whole pot together. So to dry and we’ll be back.

We’re back, dry flowers and we’re going to think about decorating the centers of the flowers. So this is where you can be kind of creative. If you have old buttons or sparkly things from other projects or you could even take a piece of yarn and wrap it around. You could use glitter. We’re going to use pipe cleaners for the stems and for the little curly cute leaves. I have a little craft packed here that has the pipe cleaners and the little puff balls. Some of the smaller puff balls might be fun to put inside of one of the flowers maybe we’ll put it inside of this yellow one. I don’t want to use puff balls on all of them.

So we’ll wait on that and we’ll put some hot glue in here and put our little puff ball in there. So there, will be the center of one of our flowers and maybe we’ll take a pipe cleaner, the half of it and kind of make a circle out of it. I’m going to make it too big, like that and put it in the middle of this one. There we have a different center and let’s see.

There’s a button, I think I’ll glue it this way. Put that in the center of the red one. So now we have the one with a button, maybe we’ll put a smaller button with other different color on top of that one kind of a big sunflower look there. And the last one, let’s go ahead and put a little glitter in this one. Put some glue here and how about some silver. And with the glitter, you’ll have to wait until the center is completely dry and then you can really get the excess off. This isn’t going to stick, it will all disappear eventually that little pieces I’ve got on the petals. So there we have our five flowers.

And now, we’re going to go ahead and pick some colors for our stems. Let’s see maybe we’ll do a blue, a yellow, a red to kind of pull all of our colors together. So to make those curls, all I did was I used a pencil like this and I just wrap the pipe cleaner around the pencil, like so. And then I just made kind of a flat circle at the top like this because that’s the part I’m going to glue to the bottom of the flower, like so. So I just squirt the glue on the pipe cleaner and then stick it to the bottom of the flower. So then we have a flower like that and there we have our flowers. And you want a couple of extra, I think I’ll do a yellow to little leaf with extra twirl leaves.

So now, we’re ready to go ahead and assemble our flower pot. On the one that I already made for my decorating I actually use beads because I have a leftover beads and I put a little bit of stuffing down at the bottom to support the pipe cleaners.

What you have to do and you’ll see as I start working that you kind of hold the pipe cleaner in place and then put your stuffing in there. And then, I’m going to use bark at the very end to make it look more realistic and I’ll actually be laying little pieces of bark on top. And I may actually use some of it to hold up the pipe cleaners. So this part is a little tricky. I think I’m just going to put a little bit of tissue at the bottom just to kind of prop up the flowers as I start to put them in here.

And you have to kind of play with them and move them around because you want them to stand up so the bark may actually be at good way to prop this as I put them in. So you’re going to find what works best for you. There we have it. So here’s our little bit more realistic bark flower pot. So I hope you have as much fun making this as I do.
