Hi I'm Mark Donovan from HomeAdditionPlus.com and today I'm going to show you how to install a mailbox post.
It’s important that the height of the mailbox is between 41 and 45 inches from the ground, according to the US Postal Office. The first thing I did was dig about a 16 inch deep by 1 foot wide hole to set the pre-fab mailbox post into it. And then attach two long thin boards to one side and then another side of the mailbox post so that they’re 90 degrees to each other. This will allow me to make sure the post is perfectly level.
At the far end of the long boards, I screw them into stakes in the ground at a position such as again the mailbox is perfectly level. Again, use your level on the mailbox post to make sure that the bubble is centered between the lines on the level, check both sides to make sure it’s perfectly straight.
I then poured 250-pound bags of quick concrete mix into the hole along with two gallons of water and then mix it with a shovel. After the concrete has set up for about 24 hours, remove this holding thin boards.
Next, I'm attaching mailbox mounting plates to the mailbox’s closed arm. Next, to dress up the post, I'm going to re-paint it prior to mounting the mailbox itself. And we’ll just let this dry and then come back and finally mount the mailbox itself under the post.
Once the paint is dry and mounted the mailbox itself onto the mailbox plate. I'm just going to attach the mailbox to the mailbox plate with a few one and 5/8 inch exterior wood screws. Next, we’ll return the top cell around the post. I’ll put a little grass eater here and this project will basically be done.
And so that’s it, we’ve installed our mailbox post with a new mailbox and it looks great.
