David Lupberger: Hi! I’m David Lupberger, with ServiceMagic.com. Homeowners around the country are often times intensely focused on the appearance of their lawn. They’ll spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars to make sure that their lawn and landscaping is the talk of the block, but many of these same people are confuse about how to best maintain their lawn, and to how to find the right person for their landscaping project. When Deanna Smith and her family moved in to their home a few years ago, they knew renovating their back yard was something they would’ve eventually want to tackle. Deanna Smith: We wanted a space for our kids, and a place where we could hang out while they were playing. David Lupberger: Deanna sketched out her vision, which included a fire pit, walkway and a huge patio, all made from stone. Deanna Smith: It’s exactly the way we envisioned it and in fact probably a little bit better. I didn’t really envisioned that being that nice curve, which I think is really impressive with hardscape gave because that’s not really easy to accomplish. Every stone had to be cut, it was really, I think a huge labor, and it was well done. David Lupberger: New to the area, Deanna used ServiceMagic to find her contractor, which match her project with Rocky Dysart of Diverse Ladscaping. Long after it is done, Rocky’s crew still comes back to make sure everything is in order. Rocky Dysart: It feels good. You know, we can always see the before and after of everything. David Lupberger: A hardscape like this is just half of the job when it comes to making a yard beautiful. People often find themselves looking over their neighbor’s fence to find out why the grass is literally always greener. Male: In the spring time people are concerned about feeding their lawns and they’re often concern that their neighbor’s lawn is looks greener than theirs. David Lupberger: For ten years, Kelly Grummons of Timberlline Gardens has been helping people to keep up with their neighbors when it comes to making their lawns green and healthy. In most cases, problems are caused by too much watering and watering at the wrong time of the day. Kelly Grummons: Generally we prefer to water grass in early morning hours. That is when the plant is really absorbing water and it’s cool enough that the water isn’t just evaporating. David Lupberger: Kelly says a lawn is more vulnerable to disease when watered in the evening or at night. He also says springtime or fall are definitely when you should fertilize and aerate your lawn to bring it much needed oxygen. Kelly recommends organic fertilizers that create a healthy environment for earthworms. Yup, it’s all about the earthworms. Kelly Grummons: The earthworms will become our best aerators that we can find, much better than a mechanical aerator. David Lupberger: That’s just the tip of the ice berg on how you can transform your lawn. To find a prescreen professional to make all your landscaping dreams a reality, check out ServiceMagic.com.
