How I love my vegetable area. It is not very big, but it got three-raised beds and I can grow an enormous variety of vegetables in here. First of all, you might be wondering what all of has doing flopping around, and what is it? Well, it is a strip of video tape. All the videos that kids are finish watching and ones that are scratched and recycling them into bird scares.
It is amazing how easily it works, the shiny surface reflects the sunlight, the birds are given a sudden shock, and they keep well away from my seedbed. And also some of this canes, we are going to think about safety in the garden, and this are little babies bottle tits that act as eye protectors to stop getting your eye poked out. You can also use a canister that you put a little bit of blue tag in the end and just replace that on there.
So anything, that is going to stop sharp end of a cane, being a hazard in the garden. Now, I love growing carrots, its one thing that we see a lot in the garden and I grow different varieties of carrots in this one raised bed, and I am going to determine to show you this, because it is a special one. It is a purple carrot. You do not get many purple carrots. So the only idea here is just look around for distant varieties, you might get different taste. You might get different flavors and colors, that if you add together to make gardening really, really fun.
Talking about making it really fun, defeat those seed merchants. Ignore what it says in the package about growing carrots from March, July or you can grow them all the year around. You can actually have carrots to pull on Christmas morning and the secret to do it is to grow them in ice cream containers. It shows a short rooted variety and you will not get many carrots but the fun of pulling them on Christmas morning is great.
Now, this are not quite ready yet, but you can see, we got little baby carrots there and it is the interest and it is the expectation that is going to be so exciting to any gardener. Now, on the incident of the thing that you could think about growing in the garden, you would not grow great big onions. Not the big Spanish onions in a small bed like this. But you might decide to grow some small spring onions and you can choose varieties that actually when team them up, will bulk up into a larger onions when left in the ground.
So team up the smaller ones, use the onions and then leave the rest and they will slowly bulk out. Now, I love to grow beans and every time you look at my bean bed, you will always find some flowers growing along side it. It is not just because I am vain to let the flowers in the garden wherever I look. It is because I am using the color of the flowers to attract insects, beneficial insects that pollinate the flowers of the beans.
The worst thing that any vegetable grower, is how bean flowers for some reason refuse to set. So this, Rebecca is here is doing a great job of attracting pollinated insects to this flowers here and hopefully, they will set a wonderful crop of beans.
Another little trick to make sure that your bean flower is set, is to every evening when the flowers open, spray them with a little mist of water that just helps the pollen to fall off and set. And potatoes, I love to grow different varieties of new potatoes. If you have not had a very big garden, do not worry, you can use containers you can use a spin. Any large container that holds about a bag full will give you the opportunity to grow potatoes. I got some of this nutty potato barrels here. They are wonderful, and hopefully, fingers crossed. We might be able to find a couple of new potatoes in here. You can just see the excitement. I am almost a child when I harvest from the vegetable patch.
Because you can feel them and you can even see them and if I can just loosen one from the root. Look at that, the first new potato of the year. That is going to go into a salad a bit later on today, I can promise you. But do not just restrict yourselves to growing one variety potatoes. Excel and grow different variety and make sure they are all new potatoes. It shows any crop ones, grow the early, the first early because those are the smaller potatoes.
