Male: Most of us are accustomed to buying pumpkins like this, this time of year. But have you ever wondered where the really big ones come from? About a month ago, I had a chance to visit with Don Arebay who has been growing champion pumpkins for about 11 years.
Male: I think this is going to be my biggest one this year.
Male: Good grief, why do you put the cloth over it?
Male: To keep the skin tender and it allows the pumpkin to grow a little more rapidly, 20 pounds a day sometimes and sometimes more.
Male: Gosh. It comes from a seed from a pumpkin that was 1061 pounds.
Male: A 1061, where were this pumpkin grown?
Male: This was grown in upper state New York.
Male: Amazing. Tell me about the support system behind such a giant pumpkin.
Male: As you can see all this foliage feeds the one pumpkin here. And it said that every leaf represents a pound for the pumpkin.
Male: What do you think it weighs?
Male: It weighs about 600 pounds and I am hoping it will go to 700 pounds.
Male: What does it take to create a 700-pound pumpkin?
Male: A lot of care and water but I would not give you my ultimate secret.
Male: It is astonishing to me that pumpkins that size can start from a single seed the size of a dime. And with just the right care and Don’s secret, it can all happen in about a 150 days. From the garden, I am Allen Smith.
