Hi, I’m Dave Epstein, and this is my garden. We’re standing in front of my one roll of fava beans first year trying to grow these guys.
Fava beans are great plant to grow you know they’ve been grown for over 5,000 years think about that. Many vegetables have not been around that long, and they have those great flowers. So even if you don’t like the beans the flowers are gorgeous that black and white. And I’m just going to pick one of these guys here, nice, long beans. You can see how beautiful they are. To use these you open them up. You take out the beans and you’re not done. There’s a waxy coating here. You want to boil this for about 10 seconds and then pop the waxy coating off and then you can use them.
Of course just go to the internet you can find plenty of recipes that involve fava beans. A great plant, very early. It can tolerate a lot of cold weather, so this can be one of the first things you start in your garden. And remember, if you’re growing it, folks were to 5,000 years ago. Think about it.
