I’m Dave Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom, a quick tip for the vegetable gardeners out there. This is broccoli, smaller than it should be. It’s mature I’ve got to cut it. The problem is it did something called buttoning. Buttoning means that the plant flowers, that’s the broccoli too early, the reason for that the plant was probably stressed, too much heat or I bought these they were also started, they were probably stressed in the container.
So how can you avoid it? Check the plants carefully. Look in the very center part of the plant. If you see a tiny little broccoli there when you’re buying them, don’t buy it. It’s too early it’s going to button or start your plants inside and get them out in the cooler weather otherwise you wanted this problem.
You can still eat it. You can cut off the top and you get some smaller side shoots, but I’m not going to get that great broccoli crop I’d hope for this year.
We have lots of great videos for you here at Growing Wisdom.
