Gord: I am here with Bob Duncan from fruit trees and more nurseries. Bob, you know I live apple trees and I love the way you get really dwarf apple trees, but I like a number of apples in my yard and I do not have a real big yard. Can you put a whole bunch of trees close together and still get the kind of fruiting quality that you need?
Bob: Yes, sure you can Gord. There is bee a trend in growing tree fruits and specially apples over the last 20 or more years. They trying to growing more and more dwarf trees that cannot be plant is extremely close together and trained in a very compact training system. So, what we have right here with this Jonathan apple is what is called a slander spindle. And if you look at the tree there is a single trunk with the branches radiating out around it longer at the base or brought it at the base and narrowing as you go up the tree. Basically a Christmas tree shape if you will. And this has been found to be the best method of growing dwarf trees because what it does is it intercept the maximum amount of light. And expose us the fruit to light and allows it to ripen properly.
Gord: Now you got and planted what about 4 feet apart.
Bob: Yes, with this particular training system the tress are trained 4-feet apart and they maintained that height below 8-feet.
Gord: So, if I wanted to plant and even closer that I, is there a way that I can do that?
Bob: Absolutely, there are some training systems where you can plant them only one or two feet apart.
Gord: It that what you have done over here?
Bob: Yes, with this particular system right here we have a super slander spindle, which is basically a takeoff on what we are just looking at. Instead of training the trees out of 4-foot base of f4 foot spacing, these trees are two foot spacing and the branches are prune so that they are maintained within that spacing.
Gord: Now, imagine the nice thing about apple trees is that is not like take a long time from the fruit either does it?
Bob: It sure does not. You know these trees that you are looking at right here I planted it in June of this, next year this trees will have fruit on them, right away. The rest of these trees that you are looking at here have only been on ground either one or two years. And they are all ready rich full size and almost full production two years active plant put on the ground.
Gord: Well, you know it is been a trend when I visit people, they offer me food can I still an apple off.
Bob: Oh you sure can. Absolutely.
Gord: Maybe active before I steal, is there one that particularly nice so that you like?
Bob: Well, other a lot of him that I have here that are really nice testing apples, but these one here is called pineapple, it is really nice tasting fruit.
Gord: As really sweet. And these is obviously a later ripening one or
Bob: Yes, it is it ripens relatively late on season and has very unique flavor.
Gord: Perfect! Bob, once again, thank you or having as so.
