How to Go Green at Home
Rebecca Brayton: Go Green starts at home. Hi, I'm Rebecca Brayton and welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking with environmental writer Adria Vasil about her book “Ecoholic Home” and to find out a few easy tips on how to turn over that green leaf.
So it may seem like a simplistic question but why would you say it’s important to live green at home?
Adria Vasil: Well, a lot of green crimes actually happen in our homes everything from water waste such an energy hugging to bring in invisible chemicals that end up lodging that some in our bodies. Every decision you make in the day from the moment you wake up and stretch and get out of the bed and brush your teeth and getting in the shower, clicking on the lights, taking your cell phone with you all those decisions can be green along the way. They all have an environmental impact and they can all be improved. And you know what we have complete control over work well. Mostly complete control over what happens in our homes unless you are ready to this it’s a little bit more limited that so we definitely have more control over those decisions that you do when you go to work or school.
Rebecca Brayton: What area of homeownership would you say is the worst in terms of green terms?
Adria Vasil: The anti bacterial chemicals drive me bananas because we think we’re killing bacteria in our home but we’re actually bringing in chemical that’s being found out in breast milk, in our blood streams, dolphins, in our children. Just getting your energies such down by turning down with thermostat and not living a lights on within the house and even unplugging all your electronics when you leave the house will actually reduce your energy bills by 10%.
Rebecca Brayton: What areas of homeownership would you say are most easily green?
Adria Vasil: there are so many tiny little easy green changes you can make getting the little close our head, unplugging your electronics even things like switching to a green cleaner. If you don’t want it take the time to make it from scratch of vinegar and baking soda, just go to the store pick a green cleaner instead of regular commercial cleaner.
Rebecca Brayton: Why would you say we should start the process in our homes?
Adria Vasil: The good place to start especially if you live in the colder climate would be at this time of year to make sure that you're keeping the cold drops out because we waste incredible amount of energy through or our windows, walls, all the sockets so there in our house and you could just go around with the instant stick and look for drops and plug of those up first and foremost.
Rebecca Brayton: Most people think that green living is more expensive, can you argue against this?
Adria Vasil: Everything that, I think our grandparents did really end up saving the environments without them even know yet. They and actually turned off the lights when they left the room, they naturally turned off thermostat at night and this we’re all moves that happens and also be better for the planet but they decided that it is the way of saving money instead of going in laundryman and spend thing $300.00 a year to dry your cloths just bring them home and hang them up on the rocks and you'll save that $300.00 instead.
If you room for veggie garden in the summer you can actually pocket about $600.00 a year just from growing your own vegetables and a small part of land you don’t need a big farm to do that, so many that changes that I've talk about end up keeping money in their pocket for a reason because I wanted to kind of counter act that myth.
