How to Update Dining Chairs

CARTER OOSTERHOUSE: Do you have some old dining room chairs that are starting to look a little dated? Let me show you how to give those dining room chairs a facelift without buying any new ones.
I’m Carter Oosterhouse, and this is your GMC Trade Secret.
Now, the easiest way to give your dining chairs a fresh new look is simply use a slipcover like this. And you can purchase this at any home good stores, or just look online and I’m sure you can find one. And most of them are universal and they work with any chair that doesn’t have arms on it.
Now, you want to make sure that you tuck in right at the seam right here, so that way all the seams line up and you can tie it nice and tight in the back. This one has two nice little sashes that we’ll be able to tie. But we want to add some color to it, so what I’m going to do is bring in this blue sash and tie it with the white ties that are already on here. All right. That looks great.
Let’s go ahead and try another one. All right, so this next chair – I really love this chair. I love the back. I love the curve. I love the shape. And the wood still looks fantastic. But the cushion itself, well, that’s a little bit dated. So I’m simply going to take this off and reupholster it.
All right. I got the cushion off. I’m going to go ahead and put this fabric on. Now, you may think reupholstering is a tough job, but actually you can see it’s pretty easy. And if you have a pneumatic nailer, it makes the job that much easier. And you also want to make sure that you keep an excess of material on the outside so you can pull it nice and tight. All right. All you have to do is place the cushion on. Look at that. And what was an outdated chair has a fresh new contemporary look.
Let’s try one more chair. All right, so the next chair is the simple white dining chair. And what I want to do is add a little border to the base here. And I also want to add a little texture to it. So what I’m going to do is use these black nail heads. And the best way to put these on is just with some needlenose. Place them on like so, and just nail them in right around the border. All right. Look at that. This chair looks so much better.
So with a little bit of effort, you can do the same with your old dining chairs.
I’m Carter Oosterhouse, and that’s your GMC Trade Secret.
