How to Fix a Leaky Frost Free Sillcock/Outdoor Faucet By HomeAdditionPlus.com
Hi, I am Mark Donovan form HomeAdditionPlus.com and today, I am going to show you how to fix a leaky frost free sillcock.
So the first thing we want to do is turn off the valve to the outside sillcock. Alright, now that we have turned the outside spigot off, I am going to take off the center screw and remove the handle. And then underneath this nut is a washer and a lot of times, the problem is on this washer, either this nut is not tight enough or the washer is damaged in any way.
Now, we are going to remove this nut here to see what the washers under looks like in behind but I am just noticing already that this nut is loose and that is probably the reason why the spigot is continuing to dribble a lot of water even though we turned off the hand valve. So the washer assembly is in here. In this particular model, the washer looks fine. I suspect that because this was not tight, that there was not a good seal and that is why we are seeing the dribbling water coming out of the sillcock. So we are going to tighten this up and see that it solves the problem.
So now that we have tightened up this nut, we are going to put the handle back on, press the center screw and we are going to turn on the water in the basement and then test this out.
So now that we have turned the valve on down the basement, we will test the spigot. It turns on nice and it looks like the valve is shutting out properly now, and that is it! It took only about five minutes to fix this. We are able to avoid having a plumber come in. All we need is a screwdriver and a cross wrench.
I just wanted to show you that with a traditional spigot assembly or sillcock that is frost free, what happens is when you turn the valve off, you are actually turning the valve off way back inside the house and that is what prevents it from having frost free conditions. In this particular one, I removed the screw and the handle and I removed this nut. In this particular assembly, you will see that there is a washer right here and it is this washer that can sometimes be damaged, which can lead to the continuous dripping or flow of the sillcock. So just take them all, you need to replace this type of washer or something.
So that is it. It took us about five minutes to fix this frost free sillcock. All we need is a pair of pliers and a screwdriver, and we have avoided the cost of a plumber.
