Right, Opuls had a bath, most of the water has been taken out with the absorbent shammy type clothes and towels. Now were going to finish her off with the hair dryer. The drying is most important part, if we left her now she looks quite good but all this would stick up, the wrong way she’d shake, she’d roll and you’d have a clean dog but an untidy looking one. So Sandra’s going to start the hair dryer up, you blow away from the dogs head and the way of the coat grows. Opul has a nice broken waive to her coat which makes it really look attractive, so its important that there aren’t bits sticking up.
So we use the brush in the same way as a hairdryer would blow dry a ladies hair and turn the hair the way it should go. The natural way, this is where a lot of people fall down when their doing show presentation. They don’t spend long enough drying it, it does take quite a long time to completely dry a dog. Make sure the dryer isn’t too hot and if you’ve got a puppy, obviously first of all you introduce it to the hair dryer by letting it sit on your knee and watching you dry your own hair and when his happy with that you can introduce it to him gradually.
We don’t always use a hair dryer, if it’s a nice sunny day but not too hot, you can do the grooming the last final grooming outside in the sun. They dry pretty quickly that way but you still do the brushing into place. The idea is to mold the hair around the body in the shape of the dog, so that the coat, which is the golden crowning glory, accentuates its confirmation. They do get to quite like this after all we ladies pay quite a lot for this sort of beauty treatment but don’t be surprised if one you prepared your dog got it looking wonderful and smelling clean. If it gets the chance he could well go and roll in the mud again, in fact he probably will.
This can take some time, don’t expect it to be all over in ten minutes. Fluff out the trouser feathering. Be sure you don’t blow the hairdryer too far under the tail of the dog because it could get a problem with the tail with frozen tail. Frozen tail, it happens to some people when they take their dogs to a show, they bath it the day before, they put it on the bench, they get it on the bench and they take into the ring and the tail hangs limp like that. The dog can move it, its frozen, the nerve is frozen, its only a temporary thing, it always comes right again but that show days off and it must uncomfortable for the dog. And that happens if the dogs tail gets wet and cold, it isn’t dried but it can also happen if the hair dryer is played too long around this area. The anal area, so be careful with that just as were careful around the—.
With her we don’t need to worry too much about the feathering because her feathering dries quite naturally anyway. It hangs down well, now to my mind this side feels dry but if I run my hands underneath into the undercoats and it isn’t quite dry yet, so we proceed along the same lines. The continual brushing brings the shine back to the dogs coat, you can see it already shining at the front I think where she’s dryer. When we’re all satisfied that the coat is thoroughly dry, what we do then a part of getting in each others way is we put the hair net on, so you smooth the hair down the way it goes and this is a doggy hairnet. An old net and you put this over the dog at that end, smooth the hair down the way it should go and then slide it back down like that and then you lie the dog down, preferably on the floor not the table.
On her side, not on the table, this is just for demonstration purposes and then you get yourself a cup of tea and you wait for a while. If you let your dog—if you don’t do something like this, the other option is to carry on brushing for a lot longer. You’ll get bored and so will the dog. If you let your dog go off and lie by the sofa, curl upon the sofa, curl up in his bed in a bowl or sit up against a wall. Although you thought the dog was try, it wouldn’t be thoroughly dry and the next morning you get up and the dog would have all his hair set in the wrong way.
