Well, it is raining out and I should be editing videos but anyways I got a lot of lawn mowers dropped off to fix today. Their all over the place, I guess everybody else had nothing else better to do. Well all the other ones are just carburetors and pulse starts so they are pretty simple. I got this six horsepower Briggs & Stratton Murray Moore Mower The problem is not as common anymore.
It has poor compression, how I know that? Well, when I pull the pull chord it does not feel that great. Secondly, the way you know for sure, I took the muffler off just to make the sound more obvious. It has ch! ch! sound every time the exhaust releases. So I am going to pull it. So you can hear that ch! ch!. Well that tells you got to burn exhaust fill so I am going to show you now how to fix it.
When the muffler is off, here is the exhaust port and there is the valve cover thing. You have to remove those two screws to get access to valve springs. And you have to remove the cylinder head next. Well, now you can see the valve springs. Very easy to remove, you just get a flat screwdriver there and pry on that metal disk on a crooked way and it has got a figure-eight hole in it and will cost it to release the spring. Symptoms of a lawnmower in this condition are very hard to start or every time they start they sort of just pop, pop, pop and die pop, pop, pop die.
Well, once you do get them running they only have a little bit of power under high RPM and every time you try to slow them down, they stall out. Then of course increase fuel consumption and now, I have got the head unbolted so I have already release the spring now, let us get the exhaust valve out, simple as that. Well, how to tell if the exhaust valve is burnt or where it is burnt. You look at the tapered edge, you look shiny in most places then you see by interrupting at now. A dull spot, then shiny dull well that is a valve that has worked and starting to burn. Well, you have everything apart clean off the valve seat and check its condition too. On models of Briggs & Stratton lawn mowers from 1984 to 1988 they had a really big problem with the steel valve seat releasing itself from the head and flopping around would give the same funny Ch! Ch! exhaust sound. But the engines un-repairable every time the valve closes the seat just moves around and it does not--
