CARTER OOSTERHOUSE: There are some areas inside that could add to the design of your home, but they’re usually ignored. Now, I’d like to show you one of those areas in this next GMC Trade Secret. I’m Carter Oosterhouse. Come on.
Now, a stair landing is an area that you’ve probably walked over a hundred times but haven’t even thought twice about designing. Now, the square footage may be pretty small, but the opportunities for design are pretty much endless.
Now, you don’t want to crowd the space and make it completely nonfunctional, so let me show you how to do that. And we’ll start with the floor.
All right. So the first thing I chose was this runner. I wanted to make sure that it was size-appropriate, and at the same time it has this no-skid bottom since it is on a stair, so we want to make sure that it’s nice and safe.
All right. So the next piece of furniture that I chose was something that’s going to really anchor the space, and that’s the shelving system. Of course, the style works really well. It has this nice dark stain that contrasts really well against this light-colored wall. It’s completely functional because it has a lot of shelves. It’s really long. But the biggest key here is that it’s not very deep. So it’s not going to interfere with people walking up and down the stairs.
All right. So now I want to bring some balance to the area. Since these corners are kind of unused spaces, I’m bringing in items that are a little bit taller but still bring in a lot of style. Perfect.
Now, personally, I love wall sconces. I think if you can add them in your house, definitely you should go for it. And here this landing is a perfect spot. They complement each other really well. You can see they flank the window really nice, and they add a ton of visual interest.
All right. So now I feel that the window here is a little bit too high for the space. So if you have an architectural element that you’re not sure what to do with, don’t ignore it. You want to embrace it, even enhance it. So I added these window shears right here that are a little bit longer than the window. And that way this window fits much better in the space. All right.
So now I’ve brought in a few accessories to really fill out and complete the space. So if you remember, we just started with an empty space, just an open landing. Now I brought in all these different items to really fill it out, to really make it warmer. And it looks a whole lot better.
So don’t be afraid to decorate your own stair landing.
I’m Carter Oosterhouse, and that’s your GMC Trade Secret.
