Hi, I am Dr. Lauren at petside.com. People often ask me how to cut their cat's nails at home. I am going to show you a way to it that makes it really easy. It's important to keep your pets nails short. Cats have nails that grow very quickly and can actually grow so fast that they can grow into the pulp pad and cause your cat a lot of pain. Also, you want to keep your cat's nails short so that they don't cause any injury to you or to your furniture.
So before you start to cut your cat's nails, there are couple of things that you are going to want to make sure that you have. First, you don't want to use scissors. These can actually make the cat's nails splinter. You want to make sure to have a really good nail clipper, one that cuts like this.
Second, you want to have a styptic powder. Styptic powder is something that when applied to the tip of your cat's nail will stop any bleeding. It's pretty easy to make sure that you don't make your cat's nail bleed. You can actually see the vein in each nail, so you will know where to stop. What you want to do is you want to expose each nail. To do that you just gently press on the cat's toe that will make the nail go in and out, then you take your nail clipper and you just snip off the tips of the nails.
Remember, if you do make your cat's nail bleed don't worry just press a little styptic powder to the tip of the nail and I am Dr. Lauren at petside.com.
