Hi. I am Bob Schmidt with Home Remodeling Workshop. In remodeling, plumbing can be some of the most challenging things to take care of while you are working because you are dealing with the opposite side of a finished wall. You don’t really want your project to expand on to the other side, let’s say there is wall paper or you just painted it. So you don’t really want to always take a power tool to these PVC pipes when you are cutting them. I will show you how to take care of that.
Here, we have some simple nylon string. There is nothing unusual about it nothing special, its just a nylon string, like a heavy kite string. What you are going to need to do is you are going to cut of about a two-foot piece just enough that you can wrap around your hands.
Go ahead and wrap your string around your pipe, put some leather gloves on and starting slowly just a little bit at a time, get a vigorous little canner going here until it starts to heat up the pipe and make it groove. Now, the more you go, you know obviously, the more it is going through. And now, the heat from the string will actually be enough to melt right through the PVC pipe. So as long as you don’t stop, it won’t get so sticky, you just kind of keep a constant cadence going until you pop through. There you go, no damage to the other side of the wall. You got a cut here to start with, maybe go ahead and flexed out, then may be you can use a tool on it.
A safe and easy way to cut pipe, pretty much assuring that your not going to do any damage to the other side of the wall. I am sure I am going to get some messages from some plumbers saying that they actually make a wire tool with handles on the end, and also does this and that’s fine. They work very well and if you like to go buy yourself a pair. If not, if you have some nylon string laying around, you might want to give it a shot.
