Audra Lowe: Though curls are a good way to add some volume to your hair. But for those not born with naturally curly hair, you need a great iron to get that look. Celebrity hairstylist Gregg Giannillo explains how to make three different types of curls in today’s Better Tressed.
Gregg Giannillo: This is my friend Patty. And Patty has gorgeous beautiful, very healthy straight hair. But once in a while, she really wants to try a little curl to mix it up a bit. There are three different types of curl: wave, spiral and barrel. Now, this might look a little weird to you. It’s a double-prong iron. Okay, if you noticed I have gloves on for this one because you got to be really careful with the heat because you’re using your hands to manipulate the hair around the iron.
So, winding it through onto the iron almost like what a braid would be. It’s more of a panel horizontal wave rather than a vertical one. And by that, I mean that when you take it out and see it, the wave pattern goes this way. This is a spiral curl created with a single-barrel iron where the hair is wrapped directly around the barrel itself. This creates a spiral. And that’s a spiral curl.
There’re all different types of iron. And this iron is a Marcel iron that carries the hair through the iron instead of the iron being wrapped around the hair. This one creates more of a barrel curl. And when you see how it’s finished, you’ll recognize the difference. This one is brushed away and has more of a softer looser curl effect. Okay, so here are the three different types of curl with three different irons. This is a single barrel, which creates a spiral. This is a double barrel, which creates a panel wave and this is a more typical traditional Marcel iron, which creates a roll.
Those are your three different types of curls. And that’s your tip of the day.
