And now as promised, let us dive in and start learning the basics of how to use some of these great features to create a simple webpage.
I will begin by closing the site that I am working on. You can open and close existing websites by simply choosing open site or close site. Now we are going to begin by creating a new website, simply choose File, New, and Website. Now about we are going to start like creating a relatively simple HTML page for us to sure that everything in learning this introduction will apply to more complex site development later.
We are going to start from scratch but you will find all of the images and the pre-made pages that I have already done for this little site in the Chapter One folder that would have installed on your desktop if you installed the full series. Again if you do not have the project files, it is not a problem, we are just going to be inserting some images and typing a little text, so you can use any gif, jpeg, of ping format images to follow along with this simple exercise.
When you create a new website like this, you have the option of creating a general site or using one of the many templates that is included in Expression Web II. I want to start by creating a blank site to show you how to start from scratch. So you want the general option in the website tab and we are going to create an empty site. But you should know that if you create a one page website, that does not mean your website can only have one page, it just means that when Expression Web creates the folder for the site, it will automatically create the first page that goes with it at the same time.
If you want to work on an existing site, you can choose the Import Website Wizard. This is especially helpful if you want to work on an existing website that is not already on your hard drive. This will walk you through the process of copying all of the file and folders of that site from a remote system. So we are creating an empty site, another tip here, down here at the bottom of the screen and this is very easy to miss is where you can name the site folder.
Now you main website folder is never actually going to appear in your webpage or on your server. This is really just the place to keep all of the files of your website on your hard drive. If you do not change this on your hard drive, Expression Web will automatically call that My Site, My Site 1, My Site 2, and My Site 3. That maybe fine for most things, but I like to use a name that has more meaning to me so that as I am working on multiple sites I can easily move from one site to another recognizing it by the name.
So I am going to call this website Blowing Bubbles. You can also use the browse button to specify where you want to save it on your hard drive. I am going to go ahead and create this site in the my website’s folder. So all I have to do now is click OK.
All Expression Web has really done is created a folder and open it into the folder list. But again it is very important that you save all the folders and files of your website in this main website folder. Because that is the only way you can really take advantage of Expression Website management features.
