Hello and welcome to this tutorial from adobenicnacs.tk and in this video, I’m going to be showing you how to make the second of our planets in our solar system.
What we’re going to do is we’re going to create a new document which like last time, this will be the same size. I covered the sizing in the previous video, so if you haven’t already seen it, you need to check that out. So it’s my large wallpaper preset, press OK. And then, I’m going to turn the background black by holding Ctrl-I and inversing the color on the background layer. I’m then going to create a new layer. I’m going to grab my circular marquee tool, hold my Shift key and drag out a perfect circle. I can let go and center it slightly. I’m going to go to filter, render clouds, filter, render difference clouds, filter, distort, spherize 100%, press OK, then hold my Ctrl-F to repeat the filter. So there we go, so I’m going to deselect this by Ctrl-D and I’m going to turn off the visibility of that background there. The reason behind this will come apparent in a minute.
We’ll then go to select color range, we’ll choose a black of our planet. And we have the background layers still one, even though the background layer is a part of our current layer, it would still deselect it. So I’m going to set my fuzziness to around 75, press OK. I'm going to go filter. Actually, I’m going to go and create a new layer first. Filter, render, clouds, filter, render, difference clouds, and then create a new layer. I’m going to hold Ctrl-D to deselect, and then go select color range, choose a black, lower the fuzziness to about 50. And then go to filter, render, clouds, filter, render, difference clouds, hold Ctrl-D to deselect. And we’re just going to merge all these layers by holding our Shift key and click to layer one. So now, all three of our layers are highlighted, except the background layer, which we can now turn on. I’m going to hold my Ctrl-E to merge them. On merging them, it will ask us to color the only one, which is just easy at the long run.
So then, I’m going to hold Ctrl-U to turn up my hue and saturation panel. So now, what we’re going to do is check colorize and then we’re just going to direct the hue slightly over to this way so it’s more orange in color and we’re going to boost up the saturation. I’m taking the lightness down and we just basically have to play with these settings until we find some of it behind. So it’s probably going to be reasonably—well, it won’t be desaturated. It will be just around the neutral point. And then, the lightness will also be quite dark. That looks fine. The settings I’m using is hue 25, saturation 57, and minus 64 for lightness. I’m just going to quickly exit Skype so that I'm not annoyed during this tutorial. And then, we’re going to press OK.
So that’s our planet so far. What you could always try is if it doesn’t look spherical enough, just in case you feel that way, you can go on—I’m holding my Ctrl key and click it on the layer. This creates a selection around everything visible on the layer, and I’m going to filter, distort, spherize. And then try 100%. You could try that. If you don’t like it, just go back to it. I’m quite happy with it like this. I might even just try spherizing it maybe about 40%. That’s better.
Okay. All we have left to do is apply the lighting effects and save it out, so I’m going to go to filter, render, lighting effects, set my lighting by tracking these points around. Try that. There we go, that was very nice. I’m going to hold my Ctrl-Shift-S, so I’m going to have the save as dialogue. I’m then going to navigate to my folder, put it to Planets, Photoshop Documents, save this as GasPlanet.psd and that’s what we got in there, which I was trying earlier, which going to replace that. Press OK to maximum compatibility, make sure it’s checked. I should have kept the window up for a bit longer, but you’ll probably know what to do with that by the time you’ve got this far. I’m going to hold my Ctrl-Shift-S, I’ll go up one level, go to jpeg, go to file with jpeg and as you can see, I’ve already got one here so I’m going to just overwrite it. I’m going to set my quality to maximum as far sight is not an issue for me.
But if you’re already doing this and you’re space frenzy—I didn’t mean to say that—if you are low on space in your hard drive, you may want to lower the quality of this. Lowering the quality doesn’t really do that much to it. It’s not a drastic quality loss. And if you’re going to go to the web, you’re going to need to drastically lower the quality, but I’m not doing either. So I’m going to press OK and we’re all saved out. I’m ready to move on to the next planet, which we will be doing in the next tutorial when it comes out.
