A beach theme bathroom can be both refreshing and relaxing. Designing decorative items can be a chore. So here are some tips on how to keep your beach theme bathroom from turning tacky. I am Meagan Carter and this is AsktheDecorator.
When decorating a theme room, the key is not going overboard and that is especially true in beach theme bathrooms. Most bathroom décor is sold in set so that you can get matching towels, rugs, shower curtains, toothbrush holders, soap dishes, etc. And while they will look cute in a store, trust me, when you bring them home, they will be overwhelming. Too many palm trees is a bad thing. When decorating a beach team bathroom and you want to capture the feeling of the beach rather than the exact image of it. When you go to the beach, you do not see pictures of palm trees everywhere, so why do you want them in your bathroom. Instead, just use colors and textures that remind you of being at the beach. To pick the perfect beach colors, I find using an inspiration piece works best. An inspiration piece allows you to decide whether you want a fun and exciting, relaxing or slumber beach theme bathroom.
For this bathroom, I used this painting of a cream on an old door. It has a wonderful North Carolina casual beach you feel, that the home owner loved. When finding your inspiration piece, you could an object that you find strikingly beautiful such as pictures of a certain beach, bird flocks, knickknacks, beach towels, seashells, anything. Once you have found your inspiration piece, find colors in the piece you like. Typically, beach team bathroom colors are blue for the water, yellow for the sun, tan for the sand, white for the surf, gray and brown for beach wood and green for beach grass. When those colors are used in a room, they will give the feeling of being at the beach without being overwhelming. After finding the colors you would like to use, it is time to choose decorative accessories. Look for accessories made of things that are associated with the beach. For example, warmer polished wood, glass jars or bottles, stone, seashells, sand dollars, starfish, lanterns, twine and of course floppy towels. Using objects reminiscing of the beach will help to create the feeling you are looking for. With the combination of beach colors and beach objects, your bathroom will make you feel like you are on the coast without screaming it at you. And you will find that this type of beach theme bathroom is much more relaxing and inviting. So go throw away all those matching sets and find some beautiful complementary accessories. I am Meagan Carter and this is ask the decorator.
