Hi! I’m Mark Donovan from homeadditionplus.com. And today, I’m in the process of preparing my garden for the spring.
If you live in a rocky or sandy soil area like we do here in New England or New Hampshire in particular, it’s important to add an organic material to the soil so that you can retain water and to some extent add fertilizer to the soil. What I am about to install today or to break into the garden is some organic compost that contains some cow manure. I’m going to rake it in and then give it a couple of days and then I will actually begin to seed my garden.
When broadcasting compost material this type, you want to put in around 10 to 12 pounds per 100 square feet of the area. After dumping the contents of the bag out, all we’re going to do is take a rake, metal rake and just we’ll spread it around the garden, working into the soil. And then we’re going to let this rest for a day or two. And then we’ll probably, we can start to plant the garden. Previous to broadcasting the compost material in the garden, I’ve put fertilizer just to help strengthen the soil. The compost material again is really acting to an organic matter into the garden particularly this is a very sandy and a stony soil. So, that’s it.
