Dr. Travis Stork: Dear Doctors, I am a 25-year-old woman with "bacne"! That's right back acne. I have occasional breakouts on my face but my back is definitely the bigger issue. Is there anything I can do for this?
And this is a common problem. We have almost all suffered from it. We don't like to talk about it, but we have all. I have had back acne before, we all have.
Dr. Jim Sears: I am guilty too.
Dr. Drew Ordon: You can get acne really in any part of your body.
Glynis Ablon: The idea is that you can get acne on the back, you can on the face, on the chest, on the rear end -
Number one I have my patients get an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide that will work as your antibacterial agent. You can get a cleanser that contains salicylic acid or even glycolic acid to help exfoliate the skin and reduce sebum production. So you are kind of covering that way.
Dr. Travis Stork: But how do I get it on?
Glynis Ablon: Spatula.
Dr. Drew Ordon: You need somebody to scrub your back there Travis.
Glynis Ablon: These are my favorites. These would be my favorite and you can even attach one of these and I think they sell them because this does not grow bacteria.
[Cross Talk]
Glynis Ablon: The little synthetic fibers do not allow bacteria.
Dr. Travis Stork: So let me just ask that. If I put spatula.
Glynis Ablon: Spatula for your medicine.
Dr. Travis Stork: But I would put it literally some medicine on here and do this.
Glynis Ablon: Correct, correct.
Dr. Travis Stork: So our people making mistakes in their showers, they don't even know it?
Glynis Ablon: Well one of the things we found is that a lot of people use conditioner on hair. So people, men and women, they have longer hair, the conditioner gets put in, it runs down their back and they don't rinse off the conditioner so that can clot the pores as well.
Dr. Travis Stork: Should you rinse off the conditioner before you wash your back and face?
Glynis Ablon: The idea is that before your final step, you can wash once but your final step should be washing off that back a second time if you want with your cleanser so that you don't need that on it.
Dr. Travis Stork: So I will never look at a spatula, in the same way these are great tips. Thank you so very much. I appreciate it.
