Hi! I am Dave Epstein, this is Growing Wisdom. A lot is going on in the garden and it is a busy time of the year. I am just hanging my humming bird feed or backup. I just made some of the humming foods, it is an easy thing to do. It is basically quart a cup of sugar to one cup of water and you can figure out how to double it or have it from there. But you know there is a lot of plants in the garden that humming birds are attracted to and I want to introduce you to one of my favorites. It is the cardinal flower or lobelia. You know it is an amazing flower and it loves it moist. You might see it in area where it is a little bit moist and that is where I have it. So we are going to walk down there and I want to show you how it grows. Alright, so here we are, this is very close to the wetlands right there so you have to assume tat there is some moisture coming up and these plants love it. You know the red is spectacular, amazing, brilliants, whole hosts of words. They could try to think -- describe it. But you can see why it is called the cardinal flower because of this cardinal red and this will bloom for several weeks and believe it or not, I only had one of these here. Just a couple of years ago so it will spread
If this is happy, it is going to spread and because it is native I do not mine that it is spreading so it could spread into the wetlands, that would be fine and it does attract, as we have said the humming birds. It also attracts butterflies as well. So just a great plant, I really love it. You have to love the red though. It cannot fight some of the other colors, you know, get some pink roses there and it can be a little bit of too much of a contrast but sort of a personal choice, is it not? So there you go, lobelia cardinal flower, a wonderful flower for parts on with little bit of moisture, this guy is really happy.
