New, what we will do is begin formatting our sample file here. As you can see, it already got a little bit of formatting on it. Maybe this is a document that a coworker sent to you or perhaps a client or something like this. And what we will be doing is applying some new formatting to this file in Word.
As you can see down in the bottom left hand corner, we have a five page document here. So we have our page count area there. What we will do here is we will remove all of the formatting off of this document. We will strip all the formatting and then we will begin reapplying our new formatting. So, the first thing that I am going to do is I am on my Home tab here. And way over on the right hand side, I have a Select drop down menu and I am going to choose Select All. That selects all the content in my document all the way through all five pages. And, what I am going to do is up underneath my Font category here, I am going to click on Clear Formatting. And what that does is it takes all the formatting off of my document so if I had any color or any font or anything like this being used in my document, it is all completely removed.
Now, what we will do is some basic text formatting here. A new feature in Word 2007 is something called the Mini toolbar. If I make some kind of a selection here and just pause for a second, what you get is this mini toolbar showing up. Let me do that one more time. I am going to make a selection and you see the mini toolbar sort of show up. If you move your mouse over top of it, then it actually solidifies on your screen. This mini toolbar makes formatting your text very, very easy. Of course, it also makes formatting very quickly. Now, some option that you have on your mini toolbar, you have your Font drop down menu. Notice by the way something new in Word 2007, you actually get the look of the font showing up inside your menus that makes it nice and easy to choose your fonts. So we have a Font Menu, we also have a Size Menu. We can change the color of our text. We can make it Bold, Italic, Centered, we can highlight it and some other things like indenting and bullets and so on. So keep your eye on this mini toolbar.
One more time, create a selection. You will see I call it the ghost of the mini toolbar. Move your cursor towards it and then it solidifies. The mini toolbar will also appear whenever you right click. I do not know if you do a lot of right clicking or not but that mini toolbar shows up right away as soon as I right click. So, let us actually do some formatting now with the mini toolbar. I am going to go and cerate my selection. And there is the ghost of my mini toolbar showing up. I will move my cursor towards it and it solidifies on screen. And let us just do some simple formatting changes here. So I am going to drop down my Font Menu and maybe I will choose this for my font her and maybe I will make my size just a little bit larger and maybe I will also add in some color here so just some very simple changes. As soon as I click away, my mini toolbar disappears.
So that is one way to format text in Word. Here is another way. I am going to make another selection here. Up on my Home tab, I have the font category and you will see some of the same formatting commands there. For example, font and size and so on but here is a bit of a twist for you. This is something new in Word 2007. I want to go and choose a different font but here is what we get. If you notice the font in my selection changing, this is what we call Live Preview in Office 2007. So in other words, this is not restricted just to Word. This is in some of your other Office 2007 programs as well. And I will be pointing them out as we go along. So again, this is called Live Preview. This helps you decide how you want to format your content without actually committing to it. So I am going to choose Berlin Sans here. You will see live preview not for all of your commands but for many of them. Here are few others here. If I choose for example the highlight and also my font color. One other thing that you can do in Word 2007 is you may have noticed inside your different categories, you have this little arrow buttons here. For example, I am going to click on the arrow button from my Font Category and that brings me into my font dialog box. This font dialog box is right out of previous versions of Word.
So again, as you are getting up to speed on 2007, you can use these little arrow buttons to get into some familiar dialog boxes. And again, if this is the first time that you have seen this, you will have options for font, style, size and so on. The interesting thing about this dialog box is as I choose different fonts here, maybe I will choose italic and perhaps a different size here, I will see a live preview now down at the bottom of the dialog box. So you can use this dialog box that is if you choose as well. I am going to cancel this out though.
