Let’s talk a little bit about scars and I have my favorite little skin model. I don’t where they got the skin but it’s pretty cool. Just to orient everybody, this is the epidermis, this is the dermis, the subcutaneous fat and finally, the red would be muscle with the blood vessels and nerves in it. This is a hair follicle which you see. In your epidermis, it has its base and the dermis. But what happens in any injury, surgery, you’re damaging the epidermis and the dermis, it’s just the body’s natural response to injury. It heals itself by forming scar and what happens, most of that takes place in the dermis here. The cells there create collagen. That’s normal healing but a lot of times, you over heal so that you have a thick, reddened, raised scar.
