Honey Gathering in the Mountains in Africa
Honey has been the main stay of the mountain communities for hundreds of years. The traditional honey gathering technique was simple. Find the hive, start a fire, smoke the bees out until they are left and then gather their honey. For the gatherers, the bees and the environment, this method has serious drawbacks. Burning the trees in which bees build their hives destroyed hundreds of precious individual trees and the bush fire started for this purpose often rage out of control threatening entire ecosystems.
The gatherers often fell from the trees. And the most of the days work would produce was one gallon of honey. Getting stung was a given and it could fatal if the bees swarmed. In spite of its outstanding diversity, this area was suffering serious environmental degradation and so the UNDP stepped in within Africa 2000 project. They introduced the Kenyan beehive. A simple design, it involves a wooden box into which a queen bee is seeded. The box is then place within easy reach of the village. 120 Kenyan beehives have since being built. Bush fire, a greatly reduce that’s collecting by burning has virtually stopped.
As a result, vegetation is returning to the burned areas. Soil erosion has been reduced and better water absorbs has intern led to higher crop yields. Bee keeping the marketing of honey have now increase as income generating activities and the whole villagers are now involved in the enterprise as our young people.
