Home Cooking With Trisha Yearwood

Audra Lowe: In here Trish Yearwood is best known for belting out country music hits but recently she’s been showing off her domestic side in the kitchen with not one but 2 hit cookbooks. Trisha’s bringing a little bit of country to the New York’s Food and Wine Festival and that is where Lesley caught up with the star.
Lesley Nagy: We know you so well as a country music star what started your passion for cooking?
Trisha Yearwood: I learned to cook when I left home for college because my mom is a great cook and I missed her food when I left home and so its always been something I have really loved to do and even though I traveled the world and I’ve been everywhere when I’m home I cooked and it’s something that I really enjoy doing.
Lesley: Home is in Oklahoma with hubby Garth Brooks and his three daughters. Trish may lead a music star life but when she’s cooking she’s completely down to earth.
Do you ever sing when you cook?
Trisha: Not really, not so much. I kind those are kind of separate things.
For the cookbook the first one was really just born out of something that I love to do and bought my mom and my sister and putting all recipes in one place never expecting to be a New York Times Bestseller you know so then there was second book and it is done in the first book so here I am sort of getting the music is the thing that I wanted to use since I was a little kid and cooking is a passion of mine so I feel really lucky because I’m getting to do things that I really love to do.
Lesley: How far do you go, do you grow your own veggies, do you raise chickens at all on your ranch in Oklahoma?
Trisha: No, we don’t have a garden. We live on kind of there’s a lot of rock and so it’s a challenge something that I want to do but also a garden no point intended you have to tend the garden and when we travel enough that its hard to do at this point but that’s not really what I love to do. I grew up on a farm we raised our own cows and pigs and chickens and we had our own garden and canned and all that so I grew up doing that and I would like to do that again but not at this point we’re not doing that.
Lesley: Do you make meal time a family affair?
Trisha: Yes as much as we can. You know we don’t have a home cooked meal every single night because we have soccer school and all kinds of stuff going on but we try to sit down as a family for nights a week and have a meal at the table together.
Lesley: Just like a typical family.
Trisha: Exactly we are.
Lesley: You have 12 hit albums are you going to do another?
Trisha: Yeah definitely I’m listening to the songs right now so I’ll be in the studio too so at least the music is going with the food.
Lesley: Now that would be number 13 wouldn’t that be unlucky?
Trisha: Nah it will be good.
Audra: Thanks Lesley she’s a busy lady well Trisha says yes she’ll be collaborating with Garth in the future but that won’t happen they say until their youngest finishes high school.
