The NY1 and the BBC have details of his death. “The 50-year old was shot in the face and his childhood friend was killed as the two men sat in a car Tuesday night.” “After doctors confirmed that he was brain dead, his mother made the decision to take him off life support on Saturday.”   Camacho has been eulogized by several outlets as an eccentric boxer who took down some of the best to ever step into a ring. CNN has the video. “During his 30-year career, the former lightweight champion was known just as much for his flamboyance as he was his quick hands and feet.” Camacho’s conquests on the canvas include two wins against Roberto Duran and a knock-out against Sugar Ray Leonard, which ended Leonard’s comeback. But Camacho also had a way with illegalities over the years. As The New York Times reports... “He was arrested numerous times on various charges, among them domestic abuse, possession of a controlled substance, burglary and trying to take an M-16 rifle through customs. This year he turned himself in after a warrant was issued charging him with beating one of his sons. A trial was pending at his death.” Along with Camacho’s shortcomings, ESPN’s Wallace Matthews remembers the Spanish Harlem-bred boxer as “the ultimate survivor.” “...The truth is, Camacho never learned to do much more than just survive. And obviously, he kept pushing his luck until, inevitably, his incredible luck finally ran out.”
