ERIC STROMER: Hey, I’m Eric Stromer. Here’s your GMC Trade Secret.
Whether your garden is filled with flowers or vegetables, good soil is the key. I’m going to show you some common ingredients that can make your soil more nutrient-rich. Check it out.
Before planting, you want to amend the soil throughout the entire planting area with compost. For gardens, you want to mix compost to a 10- to 12-inch depth. For every 100 square feet of planting area, mix in 16 to 24 square feet of compost, depending on if the area is more clay or more sand. For sandy areas, mix in the larger amount of compost.
Now, other amendments that’ll improve the health of your soil are coffee grounds, earthworm castings and crushed eggshells. Used coffee grounds are a great product that’s readily available. Though they are slightly acidic, they are a great source of nitrogen, an essential soil nutrient.
Earthworm castings are a gardener’s secret. The castings are the excretions left behind by worms after they digest organic matter, and they act as a great plant fertilizer, growth enhancer, and the ultimate compost. Crushed eggshells are another great material that you can use in your garden. They’re an excellent source of calcium, which fast-growing plants especially can benefit from.
Now, before you start planting, you’re going to want to fertilizer. And you’re going to want to fertilizer according to your soil’s needs, moderately and responsibly. Now, there’s a couple of ways to determine the needs of your soil. You can either have it professionally tested or you can buy one of these soil-testing kits, which will test for pH, nitrogen balance, phosphorus or potassium.
Now, once you’ve determined your soil’s needs, you’re going to want to use a natural organic and well-balanced fertilizer. And the way that you can determine a well-balanced fertilizer is if the package has all the same numbers on it; for example, 5-5-5 of 10-10-10.
Soil is where your plants get all the water and nutrients, and it’s important to keep it healthy and balanced. And adding the right amendments can do just that and make all the difference.
