Female Host: Whether your hair is wavy, curly or kinky, a lot of women struggle with hair that seems to be out of control. But in today’s Better Beauty we sent celebrity hair stylist Gregg Giannillo to the new Hair Rules Salon for a lesson on trimming our tresses and learn to love our lucks.
Gregg Giannillo: Hey A. Dickey! Hi! I’m Gregg Giannillo, nice to meet you.
A. Dickey: Hi Gregg! It’s a pleasure. Come on in I will show you around.
Gregg Giannillo: Thank you!
Female Host: The Hair Rules Salon just opened on 9th Avenue in New York City by celebrity stylist A. Dickey who’s worked on the hair of Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker and Naomi Campbell. His mission is to style and care for all textures of hair no matter what a person’s ethnicity.
A. Dickey: Hair is created equal but it’s not all treated equal.
Female Host: The salon’s partner Kara Young is also a loyal client of Dickey’s after damaging her kinky hair for years while working as a supermodel.
A. Dickey: Kara and I met years ago through a friend of ours working on En Vogue and you know the troubles with her hair.
Kara Young: I would relax my hair and color it and get my hair blow dried straight every single day.
Female Host: Dickey helped Kara manage her hair so that she no longer needs damaging straighetners or weaves.
Gregg Giannillo: So what’s the secret here is it like a special ingredient? Is it a special haircut or technique?
A. Dickey: What we recognized that all of the textures need to cleanse condition style finish. That’s something that they all share but what they need is extreme hydration and moisture.
Female Host: Dickey’s created a series of products designed to cleanse kinky, wavy and even curly hair.
A. Dickey: One of the most important products that we have is the cleansing cream. That you are able to cleanse your hair without the sulfates and the shampoos that suds up and dry up the hair. It’s really about from the starting point of adding moisture to the hair so you will get a better curl pattern, wave pattern or spiral kinky pattern.
Female Host: After cleansing, Dickey says it’s vital to condition your hair according to its texture.
A. Dickey: We don’t wash our faces with bar soap anymore and so we start and thought of it for hair instead of the gimmicks in tricks and tag lines of moisturizing net, we would just change the formulation. It’s really that simple and hair care would offer much, much milder way to cleanse the hair which major conditioners and styling products work more effectively.
Female Host: Once hair is properly conditioned it’s easier for hair dresser to style it.
Gregg Giannillo: As far as cutting, is there any special techniques or things better done here by you or your stylist that differ in the approach of haircutting for someone like myself or anybody else?
A. Dickey: Yes, absolutely! That’s what we do different, it becomes a matter of for the stylist what’s the most practical way to cut this texture of hair. Generally if it’s curlier, severity of collagen or shrinkage, then we are to blow it out straight, gently with a lot of conditioners or treatments while we are using the heat on the hair. But you can’t cut what you can’t see.
Female Host: And once you’ve got healthy hair and a cut that works for your hair type, you can finish however you like.
Gregg Giannillo: So Kara you said you relax then straighten and you did a lot of different things to your hair. Are you personally against clients or you tried to avoid your clients from using relaxers, straighteners, weave for that matter?
A. Dickey: No, not at all. We don’t discriminate against all the new innovative technologies in the industry, we just want our clients and the customer to really have in a view of to achieve those things out of choice not despair being able to straighten your hair in the most healthier fashion and to accentuate whatever you got naturally. And if you choose to relax your hair, choose to get a weave and these are the best ways and techniques to be able to do those.
Female Host: If you are struggling with hair that seemed out of control don’t give up. Just try Dickey’s Hair Rules for manageable, beautiful curls that you’ll be proud to show off.
