The 30-second ad is paid for by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and will air in the D.C. area during the Super Bowl’s third quarter break.  Narrated by children, it uses footage of NRA head Wayne LaPierre’s 1999 testimony from a Congressional hearing. [Video: Mayors Against Illegal Guns ] "We think it's reasonable to provide mandatory instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show. No loopholes anywhere for anyone." [V i deo: Comedy Central ] But the NRA’s top lobbyist came out against that position while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. On Fox News Sunday , LaPierre claimed universal background checks wouldn’t be effective. [Video: C-SPAN ] "It's a fraud to call it universal. It's never going to be universal. The criminals aren't going to comply with it.” In a statement , Bloomberg’s group said it hoped the ad would highlight the NRA’s reversal on gun checks. “the gun lobby has changed its position despite support for this common-sense reform from more than 80 percent of gun owners and more than 90 percent of Americans.” A New York Times/CBS News poll in January found 85 percent of people in households with an NRA member support universal background checks for gun sales.
