Hi, I’m David Epstein. This is Growing Wisdom. We’re just outside the kitchen today and I'm growing carrots this year in a container and you might think what so interesting about that? But it’s the color of the carrots that I want to talk about and they’re purple carrot. We’re growing a carrot called, Deep Purple, this is a Johnny’s Selected Seed Variety. So were up to about 90 days of this and there just ready now to be pulled out. Let’s take a look one of the carrots and that will pull one out.
Some of these are more ready than others. You can see what so great about them is look at that color. It’s really deep purple. Even the stems have a purple tinge to them. And if you break that open, look at that fantastic dark purple color in there. It makes just a wonderful addition to salad or just to cook them plain or of course you can eat them raw.
Deep purple carrots, a different kind of carrot to grow and there are many different colors, orange to purple to white. By growing these different color carrots, you can add a splash of color to any culinary dish. One thing to remember if you are growing carrots, they like loose, well-drained soil. Not heavy clay, not a lot of stone and that way the carrots will tend to grow longer and straighter.
