Sherry: A healthy nice lawn can make you the envy of the neighborhood and increasingly Canadians want information on how to maintain their properties the natural way with water conservation in mind. Lisa Gibson is with the lawn and garden team at Canadian Tire.
Lisa: I think healthy lawn will naturally deter weeds and other pests. So now is really the best time to over seed lawn and top dress stressed areas with an organic lawn soil.
Aerating is also really beneficial as it helps with the uptake of water, air and nutrients in the soil. Once you have seeded your lawn you really want to feed your lawn about every two months with the slow release fertilizer. What you may not realize is that by using a slow release fertilizer you are actually going to reduce water consumption by about 50% because the fertilizer promotes slower long growth and requires a lot less mowing.
When it comes to mowing your lawn you really want to keep it on the longer side about three inches or so as this will really help promote strong grass which will require a lot less water. And leave your cuttings on the lawn what it will do is it will break down and provide food for the lawn as well as the natural molts to help keep moistening the soil.
Sherry: And despite increasingly tough watering restrictions, it is possible to keep your lawn well hydrated.
Lisa: Knowing how and when to water your lawn can really make a big difference you really want to water your lawn before 10 o’clock in the morning to reduce the amount of evaporation. Another common mistake is people tend to over water their lawn so we really recommend getting a water timer that will help you control the amount of water you are using.
