Grand Central is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Grand Central Terminal is one of the greatest icons of New York City. This stunning landmark turned 100 years old on Friday, February 1st, 2013. In 1913 the first set of keys was handed over to the new station’s manager with much fanfare. At midnight, the ticket booths opened up and at 12:25 A.M., the first train headed out to Albany.Now, 100 years later, the city is celebrating all that Grand Central has given to New York City. Multiple events are scheduled over many days to mark this occasion. Through February 10th, the Holiday train show exhibit will proudly display vintage model trains from the New York Transit Museum, along with New York Central railroad posters dating back to Grand Central's heyday.The building known as the Grand Central today is actually the third structure on the site. Grand Central Depot opened in 1871, followed by the rebuilt Grand Central Station in 1900. The third and final Grand Central Terminal opened in 1913 was so named as all city train lines then terminated at that site. Reportedly the largest New York City construction project at the time, the terminal featured 32 miles of train track over an area of 70 acres.
