The BBC has more details.   “Google Maps is making their way back onto the iPhone. It comes nearly three months after Apple replaced Google Maps as the inbuilt navigation system with its own system, which proved to be far inferior to Google’s.”   The latest edition of Google Maps includes the ability to search for different routes, as well as rotating 2D and 3D views. (Via WABC )   It also adds turn-by-turn navigation, which wasn’t available on previous versions of Google’s app. (Via Cult of Mac )   The prime example of Apple Maps’ flaws was when it gave several drivers in Australia a bum steer by about 45 miles, which resulted in several cases of people getting lost in the Australian bush. (Via The Guardian )   The criticism of Apple’s mapping technology became so pointed that the company’s CEO even recommended iPhone users try alternatives like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites. (Via Apple )   So how does the tech world feel about Google Maps coming back in black, so to speak?   A blogger for All Things Digital says just because Google Maps is back, don’t expect everyone to download it - but more than a few iPhone 5 holdouts will be happy and make the switch.   A writer for the New York Times says the big difference between the two is...    “Hundreds of Google employees have spent years hand-editing the maps, fixing the thousands of errors that people report every day … Apple’s maps app, on the other hand, acts positively drunk.”   A writer for Forbes is quick to point out...   “There is no lane assist, for example, or speed limit information. And because it’s not from Apple, it doesn’t have Siri integration. [That means] if you ask Siri for directions you’ll get them on Apple maps.”   While a writer for TIME says   “There was no reason for [Apple] to nix Google Maps. By bringing the app to the iPhone, Google just gave Apple’s phone a boost in its never-ending battle against handsets based on Google’s own android … Why wouldn’t Apple want to approve a program which will help it sell iPhones - and buy it time as it fixes its own Maps app?”   Apple says it is working quickly to fix the problems with its app, and has given no timetable for an updated edition. According to The New York Times , Google has admitted its new iOS app is even better than Google Maps for Android.
