On Monday, Google Maps revealed its latest update to maps of North Korea. ABC News takes a look at what is now featured on the map. “… and a blank spot has been filled on Google Maps. North Korea. Until yesterday, the maps were mostly empty. The new versions show golf courses to detention camps.” How did Google get the information? Despite speculation that it was tied to chairman Eric Schmidt’s visit just a few weeks ago, they say this development was years in the making. CNET says Google’s senior project manager made a blog post saying a group of “citizen cartographers” made it available. According to the BBC , it wasn’t easy to get the information necessary to make these changes on the site. “… the biggest obstacle towards creating a more detailed map was to get enough local knowledge to name all the features.” As CNN tells us , the upgrade is far from perfect with many secluded areas still remaining hidden from the public eye. “The availability of photos quickly thins as users scroll into the North Korean countryside and dries up almost entirely around more controversial areas marked on the map.” Al Jazeera reports many of North Korea’s detention camps did make it onto the maps for all of the world to see and details the high number of people currently being held in those camps. “… noticeable on an overview of the country are a series of city-sized, grey-coloured areas which, when zoomed in on, are identified as ‘re-education camps.’ As many as 200,000 people are estimated to be held in the North's detention system.” One large group that may not be able to see the maps would be the North Koreans. Only a select few have internet access in the impoverished nation.
