Meet the world’s newest flying machine --

It’s 800 pounds, sails at an altitude of 2,703 feet and flies at 98 miles per hour. And it’s made out of paper! The plane was launched in Eloy, Arizona by the Pima Air & Space Museum. As MSNBC reports -- it was in part, designed by a kid.

“Aeronautical engineers designed the plane, inspired by 12-year-old Tucson resident Arturo Valdenegro, whose paper airplane flew the farthest when he competed against hundreds of children in a regional paper airplane distance contest held at the museum in January.”

The museum converted Arturo’s design into a spectacle -- and set a launch date for the 45- foot long paper airplane. But the launch wasn’t without problems as the Arizona Daily Star reports.

“Structural problems with the plane delayed its scheduled morning flight on Wednesday and led flight engineers to have a helicopter lift it from its nose instead of its mid-section around 5 p.m.”

Which meant the launch would be at a time later and windier than engineers wanted. So how’d the flight go? As KEYC reports.

The giant paper plane flew for about 6 seconds yesterday in Casa Grande after a helicopter towed it up. The chopper had to cut it loose for safety reasons when the wind started getting out of hand.”
