Another wrinkle in the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin shooting. Zimmerman’s wife has been arrested and charged with perjury in connection with the case.

Shellie and George Zimmerman claimed they were poor and unable to pay for a high-priced bond. As CNN reports , prosecutors say the couple actually had more than $135,000 they acquired through an online donation fund for his defense.

ABC reports prosecutors had asked for a $1 million bail for Zimmerman. With his finances under consideration, Zimmerman was given a $150,000 bond instead, which he paid. The prosecution says — his bond should not have been that low if he had the funds.

“The defendant’s wife lied to this court. She stated she had no money, when in fact the records show he did.”

George Zimmerman’s bond was revoked, but questions surrounded Shellie’s role.  She could be held in contempt of court and prosecutors might target her. Central Florida’s News 13 calls her arrest an “amazing turn of events” but not surprising. The station’s Scott McDonald explains, prosecutors claim they have a wealth of documentation that proves Shellie’s alleged deceit.

“They say records show she transferred more than 74,000 from George’s account to her account. Now this all came from recorded jailhouse conversations between Shellie and George, allegedly talking about how much money they had.”

Prosecutors say the Zimmermans used code to talk about the money in motion. Now, Zimmerman’s defense attorney said he faces credibility issues in light of the allegedly shady money-management. The Stir agrees .

“Withholding information about her finances was a terrible gamble... [S]he's damaged her husband’s case even more.”

George Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin. According to police, he’s claiming self-defense.
